In the years following the outbreak of Covid-19, consumers are still very focused on their health and finding ways to effectively support their immune systems.
The immune system serves as the body’s defense network. It’s a vast and connected collection of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body from germs and other harmful substances. Its main role is to identify and neutralize invaders, keeping the body healthy and balanced.
To that end, there remains a great amount of interest in boosting and supporting the body’s defence. To accomplish this, people are seeking out immune-supporting products and natural solutions that are convenient to use.
This health trend also coincides with a continued interest in wellness and holistic approaches to our overall wellbeing – factors such as increased levels of stress and anxiety fall under this category and, left untreated, can also negatively affect the immune system.
Ontario-grown ginseng – Panax quinquefolius – is an adaptogen that has valuable antioxidant effects and provides a uniquely holistic approach to nurturing a resilient immune system; it can play a central role in both supporting a healthy immune system and as a part of a healthy lifestyle.
For these reasons, Ontario ginseng has long been praised by both Indigenous and Chinese cultures; its benefits to the immune system have also been the subject of several medical studies.
How Canadian Ginseng Supports the Immune System
Canadian ginseng – also known as North American ginseng – may help reduce stress levels and normalize body functions; it also has medicinal potential to support immune response, which helps fight infections.
Research shows that Canadian ginseng can be an effective immune system enhancer. One 2005 study, focusing on Panax quinquefolius ginseng extract as a treatment for, and prevention of, colds and flu, found the following amongst its 323 participants:
- A 26% drop in the incidence of sick days due to cold and flu.
- A 56% reduction in the recurrence of sick days due to cold and flu.
- A 35% decline in the number of sick days due to cold and flu.
- A significant rise amongst participants in natural killer cells and CD4/CD8 cell lines, which demonstrates enhanced viral immunity.
Other key studies, which have evaluated Canadian ginseng in the prevention of acute respiratory illness, found significant reductions in the risk of developing cold or flu.
Several laboratory studies have also demonstrated the immune-enhancing effects of Canadian ginseng, including research identifying a protein isolated from the root that may have antifungal action and anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) activity.
Ginseng, Ginsenosides, and the Immune System
Ginseng’s remarkable health benefits stem from powerful bioactive compounds called ginsenosides.
Canadian ginseng has an extraordinarily high concentration of these compounds, and the key lies in its ratio of specific types of ginsenosides:
- Rb1 – The Calming Force: This ginsenoside is known for its relaxing and potentially fatigue-reducing properties.
- Rg1 – The Energy Booster: This ginsenoside may have stimulating qualities, potentially improving cognitive function and energy levels.
Canadian ginseng offers a superior ratio of Rb1 to Rg1 ginsenosides; approximately 55% of the ginsenoside content of Canadian ginseng is Rb1. This ratio creates a balanced and potent effect that sets it apart from Asian ginseng varieties.
And while more research is needed to continue proving the medical efficacy of Panax quinquefolius, today, Canadian ginseng may help play a central role in boosting one’s immune system and contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
Adding Canadian Ginseng to Your Routine
Canadian ginseng is easy to add to a daily health routine, with options to suit different preferences. Here are a few easy ways:
- Dried Root (whole or sliced): Great for brewing into hot teas or adding to broths and soups.
- Powdered Root: Mixes easily into smoothies, yogurt, or other foods for a subtle boost.
- Capsules: A convenient way to get a standardized dose.
- Tonic: A ready-to-drink liquid for direct use.
If you’re new to ginseng, it’s a good idea to start with a small amount. Then, you can slowly increase the dosage as you see how it affects you and what works best for your body.
